Travelling to Sauze d’Oulx

One thing that makes Sauze d’Oulx an excellent choice for your winter holiday is the ease at which you can get here. Located at one end of the Susa valley, 90km west of Turin, it is ideally situated close to major travel routes.

The motorway linking Turin with Lyon runs along the valley floor below Sauze making the average transfer time from Turin airport to resort 1 hour. The proximity of the motorway also makes travelling by car a viable option. Whether you’re travelling through France or Switzerland the motorway practically drops you at the door.

In Oulx, 10 minutes down from Sauze, there is a train station that services not only local stations but also offers direct services to Paris Gare du Lyon, making it possible for people to arrive from all over Europe via the train.

By air

There are several airports that you could fly to if you were coming to Sauze d’Oulx. The nearest airport is Turin – Caselle (TRN) Location: 16km North of Turin, 90km east from Sauze. The transfer time by car is around 1 hour. Airlines that operate a regular service from the UK are British Airways, Easyjet, Ryanair and Blue Air. From the Republic of Ireland Ryanair fly from Dublin every Sunday.

Onward journey from the airport: The easiest, and more often than not, the most cost effective way to get to Sauze d’Oulx would be by private transfer. Prices are typically around €37.50 per person (depending on group size).

There is the option of taking a bus from the airport terminal to the main train station in Turin (Porta Nuova). Tickets for this can be bought from a machine in the arrivals hall and cost around €5.00. Allow 40 minutes for the journey time into Turin. Airport bus time table.

From Porta Nuova you can catch a train to Oulx. Tickets will be around €6.00. Journey time is around 90mins. Once at Oulx train station there is a regular bus service to Sauze d’Oulx. The cost is €5.00. Journey time around 15mins. It is a relatively easy journey to make although with lots of baggage it can be frustrating. A taxi from Oulx to Sauze will cost around €20 for up to 4 people. Please be aware that the last bus from Oulx to Sauze departs at 19:45.

Alternative airports: Chambery and Milan Linate have transfer times of about 2hrs. Milan Malpensa and Geneva are about 2.5hrs. Grenoble and Milan Bergamo are around 2hrs 40mins. Times are estimates and of course can differ depending on traffic.

By train

UK departures: You can take the Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet International to Paris Gare de Nord where you will then need to change over to Gare de Lyon. From here you can catch a train direct to Oulx. The whole journey takes just over 8 hours.

Local station: Oulx is the nearest train station to Sauze d’Oulx, or to give it it’s full title Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere. From Oulx it’s a 10 minute bus journey up the mountain to Sauze. You can view the bus timetable here. The cost is €5.00. Please note that the last bus up to Sauze leaves Oulx at 19:45.

Italian departures: From Turin there are regular trains from Torino Porta Nuova to Oulx. The journey will take approximately 1hr 30mins and cost in the region of €15.00. The Italian trains website will give you more information. There are also high speed train connections between Milan and Turin. This service is called Frecciarossa, or Red Arrow.

By road

If you like the idea of taking your own car on holiday then the journey to Sauze d’Oulx is relatively painless, especially if you share the driving. From most of the European ferry ports that serve the routes from the UK the driving time is around 10hrs.

PLEASE NOTE: Sauze d’Oulx operates what’s called a ZTL which is an Italian traffic control system common in many Italian towns. It restricts the vehicles allowed through the centre of the village between certain hours. All vehicles not registered with the town hall will be subject to a fine if they drive through the centre of town when the ZTL is active. The active times are between 10:00 – 13:00 & 16:30 – 22:00.

Quick question, if there’s still loads of snow and good conditions then how come they don’t extend it? I believe Val Thorens although I know is higher up runs into beginning of May

Thanks for entertaining us with your links - we are seriously considering coming next year (I will be looking this week I expect) sat having last meal and transfer in an hour to head back home.
